There was a time when wood was a necessity and that time still prevails over certain under privileged parts of the world. However, for most of the developed world, wood is now a natural source that they continue to exploit. Unlike years ago, wood is a luxury today, it is used in the manufacturing of paper, construction, designer furniture and fuel.

Furniture industry is largely associated to wood and exploits the natural source the most. Years ago people did not have a substitute for wooden furniture. So, its use was justified. Synthetic wood has the same feel and appearance as original wood, so today it is used instead of wood. It is important to remember that wood is technically a finite natural resource. Finite because it takes at least 10-20 years for one tree to reach maturity and produce a reasonable quality of wood. We can attempt to grow trees in plantations, however our wood consumption is much greater than our production. In fact every passing year, the gap widens to a horrific number. And this prompts emotional responses from environmentalists regarding bans on the cutting of wood. However, such a notion is unnatural since wood is there for consumption. We must realize that everything is done well, if it is in moderation. The problem is not the consumption of wood, rater the unnecessary depletion of a natural treasure that has been bestowed on us. Thus it's high time that we take wise actions regarding the matter and put rations on wood use.
